The Observation Monitoring team at the Met Office works to maintain
and improve the use of observations within the Numerical Weather
Prediction (NWP) assimilation of data. We do daily checks on the
quantity and quality of observational data received and assimilated,
and follow up any problems. Each month, we identify data that
should be excluded from the NWP assimilations or corrected prior
to use. We also produce statistical information on observation
and model accuracy particularly for surface
marine data, for which the Met Office is the WMO-designated
lead monitoring centre. The statistical information is used to
compile monthly Observation Monitoring
reports and can also be exploited to optimise the
assimilation algorithms.
